I saw this book below and thought of a few things. Church talent — if you’re paying them — should be rewarded just like talent at McDonald’s or at the doctor’s office. The book below is spot on.
Of course, 108 top LDS officials get paid $120K a year. Full-time General Authorities. But not any area authorities, stake presidents, bishops, or countless others serving within area wards and stakes.
In our Latter-day Saint tradition, we should be grateful for the many who help build up the Church by serving for no compensation.

I created another post here that details the parsonage/stipend that our up to 108 full-time leaders are eligible for. That discussion — do LDS leaders get paid? — has tended to be poorly understood topic, in my experience.
This post below, however, will more broadly focus on the full scope of LDS finances, tithing, etc.

This might be the best summary on the topic of the LDS Church’s endowment I’ve ever seen:
– Are the Church’s reserve funds illegal or somehow evading taxes?
– Is saving $1 Billion a year for a “rainy day” fund wrong or abnormal?
– Why would the Church have a rainy-day fund?
– What about the two alleged distributions, those must be illegal, right?
– Are there other public policy concerns?
– Should a church hold $100 billion that could otherwise be spent on helping those in need?
– Should a church have the freedom to avoid transparency into its finances and should it avoid “opening its books”?
– Is asking the poor to tithe morally wrong?

First paragraph here: ” The Washington Post’srecent news story, captioned “Mormon Church has misled members on $100 billion tax-exempt investment fund” is likely to be met with little resistance to its message. It is a familiar one: Mormonism is too rich and stays so by exploiting its members. The old canard takes its new form in a former employee and devotee’s complaint to the IRS that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is hoarding money, which should be given to charity.
Indeed, it has hoarded so much, according to an accompanying video, members would not have to pay tithing if that money were used instead of saved. What’s wrong with this picture? A lot and, not least, the facts. Forbes has already responded to the fallacies related to the legal claim: “there is nothing in the tax law that prevents churches from accumulating wealth.” [See also a subsequent analysis here.] However, the moral claims in the complaint – miserliness, dishonesty, and exploitation – invite us to investigate further. …”
Michael Quinn, a credible Latter-day Saint scholar, shares additional context in these interviews with Rick Bennett:
Bro. Roger Hendrix is an active Latter-day Saint who was a mission president in the 90s before he started working as a board member at Deseret Trust Company. His career was in construction and consulting in Southern California before he was a mission president.
This fellow, Roger Hendrix, went onto LDS critic John Dehlin’s podcast to discuss the Church’s finances.
They discussed a range of topics, including auditors of the Church, Deseret Management Company (Church’s holding company), Bonneville, Ensign Peak and other investment entities, management of tithing, the Church real estate entity, financial transparency, the Church’s net worth, and other related issues.
John repeatedly asked about conflicts of interest, nepotism, possible fraud, directing money to General Authorities’ kids’ startup businesses, the City Creek project, and other common critics’ claims and innuendo.
Bro. Hendrix repeatedly swatted those and related conspiracy theories away. Where Bro. Hendrix worked for 18 years — Deseret Trust Company — was a business that followed the law. And all his time around others in Church management operated just as he did: ethically, professionally, and legally.
Roger explained that he got a stipend when part of the trust company, but not close to what he earned on other boards. In fact, Roger stated on other boards he’s “made a lot of dough.” His stipend at the trust company didn’t change in 18 years. Sounds like it was around $10K/year. His colleagues who worked with him gave up lots of “dough”, according to Roger to work in a Church environment.
Further, no General Authorities sit on these boards. But back in the 1960s, N. Eldon Tanner started this trust company. And other LDS leaders did sit on the board. But not any longer.
No, the Church doesn’t steal money from ex-Mormons’ inheritance, though John Dehlin suggested otherwise. Dehlin also suggested General Authorities’ families and companies directly and inappropriately benefited from the trust. John made all these claims and pushed innuendo, all without evidence. Out of thin air.
Short answer to these claims: no. Such actions are unethical and illegal. This trust company, like any other, is run according to state and national laws.
Roger described the bright, trained people that work for the Church. He included that these same bright people have the Spirit, pray, and practice their faith.
John repeatedly asked questions that revealed John’s ignorance of trusts, non-profits, and investments in general.
In my opinion, John is looking for a boogey man. He believes in a sort of Bigfoot. Something the Church is hiding, lying about. Something he’ll never find. Cuz the Church doesn’t operate that way. Never has.
More questions about Church finances, tithing, etc.
John Dehlin tried another gotcha interview with Michael Quinn. Michael was excommunicated in the 90s, but despite not being a member today, still has faith in the Church. He is an excellent researcher/historian and shares a lot about the Church’s finances.
Michael details the history of stipends for LDS leaders and how the Church got onto solid financial footing. He further shares details of the multiple entities the Church uses to invest and handle its assets and overall portfolio. The Church behaves ethically and in line with its mission throughout the globe.
In addition, Michael takes the side of transparency, saying that this would be faith promoting. He quotes others who were connected to all Church finance details who suggest the Church has nothing to hide and would benefit from sharing financial information.
Michael even discusses the few financial abuses in our history: Brigham and his son accumulated wealth, an accountant who embezzled in the 60s.
Yet, he explains that the values of our leaders have been exemplary in their attempts to manage the Church’s assets. He finishes by saying faithful members should likely adjust their view by understanding Quinn’s data (book), but in his view, should remain faithful.
The LDS Church is a unique organization. Very few leaders are eligible for financial support (some call this a stipend; others call it a parsonage). In this post I usually call it a stipend.
Most leaders — tens of thousands of them — get paid zero. A very small fraction or 108 LDS leaders get paid. And that, from pay stubs leaked by LDS critics a few years ago, is $120K a year. Much less than most leaders in other faiths who occupy similar presiding rank.
One only has to review this article — These are insanely rich religious leaders (lists top 31 wealthiest religious leaders in America) — to appreciate that the LDS Church operates differently than other faiths.
Dan presents his view on the broader topic of the LDS Church’s finances, tithing, taxes, issues of non-profits, etc. in his multi-part series. I’ve so far seen up to part 11. The series will likely continue. LDS Inc. (Part One), Dan Peterson (December 2019)
Dan starts with this:
“Camilla and Spencer Kimball lived in this vast Salt Lake City mansion for thirty-two years, during his apostleship and during his presidency of the Church. He was living here when he received the 1978 revelation on priesthood. ”
I’ve frequently been bothered by critics’ claims relative to our leaders’ stipends. For those who don’t know, our top leaders — 108 General Authorities — are eligible for a stipend and certain benefits.
In the past, I felt I’ve provided adequate, but not awesome, responses to critics on the subject. Yet, among many other details, I never knew what other churches pay their leaders, for example. So, I thought I’d put together a post about clergy compensation and learn a little. Ultimately, I learned a lot. And I’ve learned to appreciate our and other churches’ leaders.
I should like to add, parenthetically for your information, that the living allowances given the General Authorities, which are very modest in comparison with executive compensation in industry and the professions, come from this business income and not from the tithing of the people.

Dan Peterson discusses the LDS leaders’ stipends on his blog here. Remember that in early 2017 MormonLeaks (a site composed primarily of ex-Mormons) had recently shared a W-2 of Pres. Eyring’s that LDS General Authorities receive a $120K annual stipend.
Rather than cause great embarrassment — once I discovered what they earned (much less than comparable leaders in other faiths) — this “revelation” led to more appreciation and understanding.
Consider, for example, the three members of the First Presidency. President Monson holds an MBA, but he was called as a full-time mission president at 31 and as an apostle at 36. Is it really to be expected that he should have lived and supported a wife and family without any income? From his very early thirties?
President Eyring holds master’s and doctoral degrees in business administration from Harvard University. President Uchtdorf was Senior Vice President for Flight Operations and Chief Pilot for Lufthansa German Airlines when he was called into full-time Church service. The amount of money these men receive while serving full-time on behalf of the Church is far below their commercial-market potential.
Consider, too, the members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. I count two heart surgeons, three lawyers (with degrees from Chicago, Stanford, and Duke), and two Harvard MBAs. One of them holds a doctorate in organizational behavior. One, with a Yale Ph.D., was the president of a large university (as, for that matter, were two others).
Three were highly successful businessmen before their call to life-long Church service. Their professional credentials are such that the stipend amounts mentioned simply aren’t that remarkable. In fact, they’re quite low.
There are roughly 4000 stakes and districts in the Church, and somewhat more than 30,000 wards and branches.
Let’s not even count the counselors. Let’s not count area authority seventies or scoutmasters or high councilors or Relief Society presidents or any of the other unpaid workers in the Church.
That still makes something on the order or 34,000 bishops and branch and district and stake presidents. None of them are paid.
Many people in non-LDS congregations serve without renumeration. But many are paid.
Over 34,000 LDS leaders don’t clock in for their service. And, as explained earlier, this 34,000 figure does not include councilors or female leaders. See table above for rates of payment by position.
The recession caused a drop in compensation. They were rising (and likely continued to go up) after 2011.
As Peterson illustrates in his story, only 108 “top-ranking” LDS leaders are paid. Not 1 local leader. And that number — 108 — may actually be less, as at least one General Authority widow had explained (off the record) that her husband declined the stipend.
Back to Peterson: “There are currently, by my count, 108 General Authorities. That’s 0.00317647058 of the number of local unit leaders (bishops and stake, district, and branch presidents) in the Church.”
“That roughly 1/3400 of the Church’s principal leaders at any given time are assigned to full-time work that allows no outside employment, and that those few are then given a stipend to support them and their families, scarcely makes the idea of the Church’s unpaid clergy a “hypocritical lie.”
And remember that all of those assigned to such full-time ecclesiastical work have already given many years of unpaid volunteer service prior to their calls.”
1 out of 3400 is small. So, not all serve without compensation. But virtually all. You can read the rest of Dan’s post (from 1/10/17) with the link above.
On 1/19/17 Dan wrote another column on the topic here.
Peterson shows us the numbers below, after being pushed by a Church critic. The completed math only undermines the critic’s position.
“The math is pretty straightforward: There are roughly 34,000 LDS Area Authority Seventies, bishops, stake presidents, district presidents, and branch presidents who receive no stipend at all.
(Although we probably shouldn’t, we’ll leave out counselors, executive secretaries, Relief Society presidents, and others whose equivalents would very possibly be paid in many other denominations.)
At this point, we factor, say, 100 General Authorities into the mix, who receive a stipend of $120K each. Now, we work out the average annual ecclesiastical income of all of those folks.
Steven Butala actually did the math in that Facebook conversation — reckoning, as I suggest above, on just one compensated person per branch, ward, district, and stake — and reports an average annual income of $353 for LDS “clergy.”
Peterson proceeds to cite average Jewish rabbi compensation, compensation for other faiths’ leaders, and a report about excessive compensation among Baptists in the past.
A few images below — found by searching Google with “paid clergy in LDS Church”. Very few images included the LDS Church. These data below are only as reference points. Not as a means to denigrate other faiths.
Health care is very expensive, especially if you’re paying for all your clergy — not only for the 108 at the top of your hierarchy.
Staffing is expensive.
I didn’t know #4: multisite churches.
Senior pastors at megachurches earn more than LDS General Authorities ($120K vs. $147K). LDS leaders start with vast experience and never retire. They have extraordinary responsibilities for a worldwide church.
The last 5 minutes of the below video review the issue of LDS stipends and contrasts with the top 10 paid clergy. Kenneth Copeland, by the way, has a net worth of $760 million.
As Jeff in the video below points out, our GAs early $120K/year. The Red Cross CEO earns $1.2M.

Comparing apples to apples — LDS bishops to pastors — the difference is obvious. Local LDS leaders are not paid. Over 34,000 (not including counselors or female leaders) receive no compensation.
The compensation for the average pastor is $89K — not too far from the $120K the top-108 LDS leaders are eligible for. However, the top leaders of non-LDS faiths generally earn much more than the $89K pastor and $120K LDS average.

More data on megachurches. Pastors usually don’t move from a 10,000-person church in LA to a 125-member church in Macon, Missouri.
I believe our LDS General Authorities get health care and possibly other benefits. So do most full-time senior pastors. Our 34,000 lay leaders get none of the below, unless they do in their private employment.
I find these tables fascinating. I admire those who serve in other churches. And I find it wonderful Latter-day Saints step in to fill roles in their church. Often lacking ideal training. We learn as we go and do our best.
Graham is a wonderful person and leader. But it’s clear from the numbers he gets much, much more from his organization than LDS leaders do. And that’s their choice. He’s highly valued, and the board rewards him for that value.
Fewer members equals less compensation:
Don’t take a clerical job in UT or WY. LDS pay may factor into these states. A megachurch in SLC still will probably be awesome. All the surrounding LDS bishops, however, pull down the mean wage.

People are most important. And senior pastors are dedicated to their flock.
Growth appears to come in part from satellites.

Dan provided another update on the topic of LDS leaders’ stipends today.
“A critic pointed out, quite correctly, that my generous estimate that 1/3400 of Mormon clergy receive a living stipend is greater than zero.
I readily grant this. I’ve never made a big issue out of the fact that clergy in other denominations receive compensation. I really couldn’t care less. But I do think it absurd to say that, because 1/3400 of Mormon “clergy” receive (relatively modest) living stipends, we’re lying when we say that we have an unpaid clergy. Overwhelmingly, we do.
Here’s how I responded to one critic on this topic a day or two ago:
“Arsenic typically occurs in rice and in water. Usually only in trace amounts. Since you insist on absolute zero, though, you should probably accuse your local Chinese restaurants of serving rice laced with arsenic and charge your local water company with poisoning its customers.
The black population of Utah is about 1.8% of total residents. That’s nearly one in fifty — far higher than the 1/3400 figure that I’ve very generously given for “paid clergy” in the Church. Since you think that 1/3400 makes the clergy of the Church “paid,” I assume that you think that 1/50 makes the population of Utah “black.” This is revolutionary stuff, and you need to share it with the national media. It could dramatically change Utah’s national and international image.”
The case of the unpaid General Authority. The Church doesn’t report the number of General Authorities who don’t accept a stipend. Ironically, MormonLeaks hasn’t searched for that statistic.
“Finally, a few months back, I had a conversation on this matter (at her initiative, since, as it turns out, she was aware of my blog posts above) with the widow of a General Authority. She told me that, when he was called to full-time service, President Hinckley asked him whether he would need compensation in order to be able to devote himself to such a calling.
He had been a successful businessman, and he responded No, that he would be able to serve without a living stipend. Good, said President Hinckley. And so he served without any compensation. She told me that she didn’t know the financial situations of most of her husband’s fellow General Authorities, but that, as it happened, she was aware of several who, like her husband, were serving at their own expense, not drawing on the money that they could have drawn from the Church.
I wasn’t surprised at this, though I had never known it for certain and had certainly never felt authorized to quiz any General Authority about his personal finances.”
We are led by capable people who — if they accept the stipend — get paid on average far less than their peers at national and international churches. They serve with love and great dedication.
UPDATE on 10/3/17:
Debates online including claims the Church was deceptive about it’s “lay ministry” this morning. So, I wrote this:
Dan’s (intentionally very low-balled) figure of paid LDS clergy: 0.00317647058
His number shows that 3.1 Latter-day Saints out of every 1000 serving get paid. But Dan didn’t include counselors, RS, YM/YW, etc. His figure is super low.
I’ll use our ward as an example below of just how many Latter-day Saints are actually serving without compensation.
Our ward has 2 additional bishopric members (Dan only counted the Bishop), 10 RS leaders, 10 YM leaders, 6 YW leaders, 20 primary leaders, 2 Cub Scout leaders, 5 Sunday School leaders, 4 High Priest leaders, 5 EQ leaders. I’ll stop there, though I could count librarians, organists, choir directors and others that get paid in other U.S. congregations.
Dan Peterson counted only 1 leader per ward. I have a total of 64 serving with no compensation, in addition to the Bishop. So the total is 65 serving for no $ in our ward. Our ward is big. Probably slightly above average in the U.S. and Canada. But it’s not as big as many wards.
So, I’ll reduce the number to 30 to better represent the average ward/branch worldwide. And this is itself likely an underestimate. But I prefer that instead of a number that is bigger than reality.
So, Dan Peterson’s number — 0.00317647058 or 3.1 per 1000 getting paid — is likely at least 30 times larger than it should be. That is, at least 30 times more people are serving in the LDS Church than his numbers show. And this, as I said, is itself a gross underestimate.
The math should look much more like this:
GA paid / total serving in the Church
108 GAs (less than 108, since at least 1 GA is likely not getting paid; the Church appropriately doesn’t release this information)
34,000 (Dan’s total # of LDS leaders serving) x 30 (Dan’s number was hugely underestimated) = 1,020,000 (still underestimated, but number closer to the total serving in the Church)
108 GAs / 1,020,000 underestimated # of total members serving = .0001058823
This new number is much lower than Dan’s original (intentionally low-balled) figure, but is still itself an underestimate.
So, less than 1 out of every 10,000 members gets paid. That’s even closer to zero.
Do we have a paid ministry? Yes. To be precise, we do. The same way that rice has traces of arsenic.
But 108 people getting a stipend is small relative to over 1,000,000 serving without compensation. Effectively, we have no paid ministry. Certainly, nothing like paid ministries in other faiths.
How many faiths would change today from their system to ours? That is, how many churches would shift to only pay 108 at the top? And nobody else?
How many would get 9,999 volunteers for every 1 paid clergy?
The LDS Church has a culture of sacrifice and service I’m not seen anywhere else!
